As of October 2026, you still can't pay for a purchase directly inside ChatGPT if you're shopping from France. What exists here is a merchant app that helps build a basket before sending you back to the retailer's own site to pay. Native in-chat payment itself, launched with much fanfare in 2025 under the name Instant Checkout, was quietly scaled back by OpenAI in spring 2026 after disappointing results. Here is what actually works today, what remains a protocol on paper, and how to prepare your product listings while the rules keep shifting.

Where does in-ChatGPT buying actually stand?

Less far along than advertised. Launched in the US on September 29, 2025, native "Instant Checkout" payment was quietly stepped back by OpenAI in favor of a model where AI helps you choose, but the purchase finishes on the merchant's own site.

OpenAI announced Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025, alongside the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed with Stripe and open-sourced. At launch, the idea was simple: a US shopper spots a product in the conversation, taps "Buy," and confirms shipping and payment without leaving ChatGPT. Etsy was the first partner, with Shopify merchants to follow.

The model didn't hold up. According to Marketing4Ecommerce, citing reporting that surfaced in early March 2026, the buy button's conversion rate stayed under 1%, against a 3–4% industry average; at Walmart, conversion through ChatGPT reached only a third of the retailer's own site. On the adoption side, only around thirty Shopify merchants had joined the program by February 2026. OpenAI confirmed the shift in late March 2026: Instacart remains the only partner offering full in-app payment, Shopify announced it would not build a native buy button, and Etsy gave no timeline for what comes next.

In other words, the "one tap, never leave the conversation" purchase promised in 2025 turned, by 2026, into a discovery flow that redirects to the merchant's site — the same journey most stores already run through Google Shopping.

Is buying inside ChatGPT available in France?

Not direct payment. What exists in France is a merchant app inside ChatGPT that helps prepare an order, then redirects to the merchant's own site to complete it.

Carrefour is, according to several trade outlets, the first European grocery retailer to launch an app in ChatGPT's app store, in late March 2026. Per Connexion France, it helps build a basket, find a nearby Drive location, get meal ideas and check stock availability — but payment doesn't happen inside ChatGPT: the order is finalized on carrefour.fr. Sephora follows a similar logic, but only in the US so far, as part of a pilot launched on March 24, 2026 according to Mind Retail, which notes that OpenAI now emphasizes product discovery over native payment even for its most advanced partners.

On native payment specifically, a French guide dated October 12, 2026 and published by GetKanal is explicit: the full-checkout programs described by OpenAI and Stripe first target shoppers located in the United States, and a French store can appear in ChatGPT if it also sells across the Atlantic, but direct payment remains reserved for North American customers. Nothing found at the time of writing points to a date for opening native payment to French merchants or shoppers.

That doesn't make the topic marginal for French consumers: according to a Shopfully study reported by CB News, 20% of French people say they used an AI tool in the past twelve months to help with a purchase decision, and 89% of them favor general-purpose generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity over a dedicated shopping tool. Usage, in other words, is running ahead of the payment infrastructure: French shoppers already use these tools to compare and decide, well before they can pay inside the conversation.

Meanwhile, agentic payment rails are being built in France through a different route. Worldline, Crédit Agricole and Mastercard completed the first production AI-agent payment in France: a customer searched for festivals through an agent, then confirmed the purchase before any charge went through. It wasn't a ChatGPT purchase, but it shows French banking infrastructure preparing for agentic commerce independently of OpenAI's own timeline.

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)?

It's the open protocol that describes how an AI agent queries a merchant catalog, places an order and triggers a payment. Co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe, it stays active even after OpenAI's retreat on native payment, but is now refocused on product discovery.

Walmart was one of the first large retailers to adopt it: per Walmart's own press release of October 14, 2025, Walmart and Sam's Club customers could link their account to ChatGPT to buy without leaving the conversation, with Stripe handling card payments; purchases were limited to a single item at launch, with multi-item carts announced for later. Nothing in the available sources suggests this integration has been opened to France.

Shopify took a different path from what was announced in 2025. According to Digital Commerce 360, Shopify chose in March 2026 to keep the purchase on the merchant's own site rather than build a native buy button inside ChatGPT: shoppers are routed to the store through an in-app browser, the merchant stays "merchant of record," and the order is tracked in Shopify Admin with specific ChatGPT referral attribution. For a Shopify merchant, that means treating ChatGPT traffic as another acquisition channel to measure, not a new point of sale.

What this means for a French store: even without native payment available, your product listing can already be discovered and recommended in a ChatGPT conversation, provided it's readable by AI crawlers and properly structured — the same logic covered in our guide on getting your products recommended by AI, entirely outside any checkout mechanism.

And Google's competing protocol, UCP?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is Google's answer to OpenAI's ACP: an open standard, announced six months earlier, so Google's own AI surfaces (AI Mode, Gemini) can complete purchases directly, with a wider circle of partners from day one.

Google unveiled UCP on January 11, 2026 at the NRF (National Retail Federation) show, through CEO Sundar Pichai, per SD Times. The protocol is framed as an open-source framework letting AI agents, consumer surfaces, retailers and payment providers interact at every step of the shopping journey, from discovery to order management. Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart helped design it; more than 20 other companies (Adyen, American Express, Best Buy, Mastercard, Stripe, Visa and Zalando among them) announced their support. Google frames the initiative around what it calls an "N x N integration bottleneck": without a common standard, every retailer has to build a separate integration for every AI surface. A first reference implementation already exists inside AI Mode and the Gemini app, and the protocol aligns with Google's own Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) for the payment leg.

UCP isn't any more available in France today than ACP is: the rollouts reported by trade press stay centered on the United States. For a French brand, the immediate question isn't choosing between ACP and UCP, but staying readable to both ecosystems: one runs on a feed submitted directly to OpenAI, the other on Google Merchant Center and Schema.org markup, already used for AI Overviews and AI Mode in France.

How do you prepare a product feed for conversational buying?

Two distinct channels exist today, and they shouldn't be confused: a file feed pushed directly to OpenAI, limited to a small set of partner merchants, and Schema.org markup on your own pages, open to every store.

The dedicated feed documented by OpenAI (developers.openai.com/commerce) expects a structured file — the formats cited vary between the independent guides describing it, from CSV and TSV to XML, JSON or JSONL — pushed by the merchant to a secured endpoint. The independent guides that have tried to document this feed don't fully agree on the exact list of required fields or the precise names of eligibility flags, which mostly shows that access remains limited to a subset of retailers and that the spec keeps evolving. What's consistent across every description, though, is the kind of information expected: a stable product ID, a title, a factual description, the listing's URL, brand, seller, an image, a price with its ISO 4217 currency code, and up-to-date availability. If your store hasn't (yet) been invited into this program, it's worth checking the official documentation directly rather than implementing anything off a third-party guide.

On Google's side, the logic is similar but runs through a tool e-commerce teams already know: several specialized analyses say UCP and AI Mode draw first on Google Merchant Center feeds, with Schema.org Product markup playing a secondary role, enriching and cross-checking the data declared in the feed rather than serving as the primary source. Google itself doesn't require any specific markup to appear in its general AI features (AI Overviews, AI Mode) — the real difference happens at the merchant feed level, not in your product page HTML.

Do you also need Schema.org Product and Offer markup on your pages?

Yes, and it's the most useful piece for nearly every store today: unlike the dedicated ACP or Merchant Center feeds, reserved for selected partners, Schema.org markup on your own pages stays within your reach, with no invitation or partner program required.

The Product schema (name, image, brand, description) paired with Offer (price, currency, availability) describes your listing in a format any AI crawler can read unambiguously, whether it's OAI-SearchBot, Google, or a future crawler tied to ACP or UCP. We cover the full implementation, with code examples, in our practical Schema.org guide for GEO, and the most common mistakes on product pages (incomplete markup, missing price, stale availability) in our guide on e-commerce: getting products recommended by AI.

This dual markup doesn't guarantee a spot in a future ChatGPT or Google shopping carousel. But it already shapes your presence in today's organic answers, the ones that name products without any checkout mechanism at all — the same logic covered in our piece on ChatGPT's product ads, which also run on a dedicated feed rather than a standard crawl.

What should you actually do?

Five actions, in order, so you don't build an integration your French customers can't use yet, while staying ready for the day it arrives.

  1. Start with Schema.org, not a dedicated feed. Unless you've been invited by OpenAI or onboarded to an AI-ready Merchant Center program, Product and Offer markup on your pages is the one optimization entirely under your control.
  2. Check the fields that come up everywhere. Stable ID, exact title, factual description, image, brand, price with ISO 4217 currency, up-to-date availability: that's what every channel reviewed here expects, dedicated feeds and markup alike.
  3. If you also sell in the US, check eligibility directly on developers.openai.com/commerce for the ACP feed, and in your Google Merchant Center account for UCP, rather than following a third-party guide that may already be outdated.
  4. Measure your organic presence before investing engineering time in a checkout channel that's still closed in France. Methods are compared in our guide to measuring your AI visibility; for a full measurement across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, see Beeleven's AI visibility audit.
  5. Revisit this topic every quarter. Instant Checkout's own history shows a feature announced in September can be walked back by March: what's true in October 2026 won't necessarily hold six months from now.

A useful first step whatever checkout channel ends up winning: check for free whether your product pages are readable by AI. GEO score across 6 criteria, in under a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy directly inside ChatGPT from France?

Not with native payment. A merchant app like Carrefour's helps prepare an order inside ChatGPT, but payment happens on the merchant's own site. Full in-app "Instant Checkout" payment remains reserved for North American customers as of this article, per the most recent specialized guides.

What exactly is Instant Checkout?

It was the name of the native payment feature OpenAI launched in the US in September 2025, letting shoppers buy without leaving ChatGPT. OpenAI revised its approach in spring 2026: conversion rates stayed low and few merchants had joined the program. The preferred journey today redirects to the merchant's own site.

Does a product feed replace Schema.org markup?

No, they're complementary channels, not interchangeable ones. A dedicated feed (to OpenAI or to Google Merchant Center) stays limited to a small set of partner merchants. Schema.org Product and Offer markup on your own pages, on the other hand, is available to any store today, no invitation needed.

Should you rush to integrate ACP or UCP?

Not for most French merchants in 2026. Both protocols first target the North American market and a narrow list of partners. It's more useful to lock down Schema.org markup on your product listings, which already counts toward your organic visibility in AI answers today, before positioning yourself on checkout flows that have no announced opening date for France.
