Your site ranks well. Your content is relevant. Yet your visits are flat, or even falling. The reason is neither a Google penalty nor a classic algorithm change. It is a structural shift: AI engines answer your visitors' questions directly, without ever sending them to your site.
This is what we call AI zero-click. And unlike Google zero-click (which has existed since 2019 with featured snippets), this one is far more radical: the AI does not just summarize your page. It synthesizes dozens of sources to produce a self-contained answer.
Zero-click in numbers: a massive phenomenon
Zero-click is not an emerging trend. It is already the norm:
- 58.5% of US Google searches already ended without any click to a third-party site in 2024, before AI Overviews became widespread (SparkToro/Datos, 2024 data).
- On queries with an AI Overview, the organic click-through rate went from 3.19% to 1.31% between January and December 2025, then rose back to 2.36% in February 2026, versus 3.82% without an AI Overview (Seer Interactive, April 2026).
- In France, Google launched AI Overviews and AI Mode on July 22, 2026 (Blog du Modérateur). Nine days later, the most exposed French sites had lost 23.1% of their CTR, with a median drop of 5.7% (Ahrefs). Our guide to AI Overviews in France explains how to get cited in them.
- ChatGPT receives 2.5 billion prompts per day (OpenAI via TechCrunch, July 2025): that is 2.5 billion questions answered without necessarily a visit to the original source.
- In 2024, Gartner forecast a 25% drop in traditional search volume by 2026, in favor of AI chatbots and assistants.
In practice: even if the AI uses your content to build its answer, the user doesn't know it. And never visits your site.
How AI "consumes" your content without crediting you
The mechanism is simple and frustrating:
- The AI crawls your site (via OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot…) and ingests your content into its training or retrieval data.
- A user asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question.
- The AI generates a synthetic answer by combining several sources, potentially including yours.
- The user gets the answer directly in the chatbot interface. No click, no visit, no conversion.
The paradox is brutal: the better your content, the more likely the AI is to use it. And the less direct traffic you get from it.

Google zero-click vs AI zero-click: two different problems
Google zero-click (featured snippets, knowledge panels) has existed for years. But AI zero-click is fundamentally different:
| Criterion | Google zero-click | AI zero-click |
|---|---|---|
| Visible source | Yes (link displayed) | Rarely |
| Brand awareness | Partially preserved | Often absent |
| Number of sources | 1 source displayed | Synthesis of dozens of sources |
| Control over the message | High (your exact text) | Low (AI rewording) |
| Volume affected | Some queries | Potentially all |
In short, AI zero-click is more opaque, more massive and harder to work around than its Google predecessor.
Which types of content are hit hardest?
Not all content is affected by zero-click in the same way. The most vulnerable:
- Generic informational content: definitions, tutorials, "top 10" lists. The AI synthesizes them easily and has no reason to cite a specific source.
- FAQs and how-to guides: a question/answer format the AI can extract and rephrase in one sentence.
- Product comparisons: the AI compiles several comparisons into one, anonymizing the sources.
The content most resistant to zero-click:
- Proprietary data: original studies, benchmarks, exclusive figures. The AI has to cite the source to be credible.
- Testimonials and case studies: unique experiences that cannot be synthesized without attribution.
- Interactive tools: a calculator, a diagnostic, a configurator. The AI cannot reproduce them in its answer.
- Opinions from identified experts: a reasoned stance, specific to one person, that the AI has to attribute in order to reuse it.
Why AI engines love numbers: factual content as a path to citation
The real question: should you block AI crawlers?
Faced with zero-click, some publishers take a hard line: blocking every AI bot in their robots.txt. That is a strategic mistake: the key is to tell the bots apart.
GPTBot is used to train OpenAI's models: blocking it does not prevent you from appearing in ChatGPT search, which relies on OAI-SearchBot. Likewise, Google-Extended has no effect on inclusion or ranking in Google Search, so none on AI Overviews either: it governs the use of your content for Gemini. Refusing training is a defensible choice. Blocking search bots (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot), on the other hand, means disappearing from those engines' answers.
Yet AI-referred traffic grew by 527% between January and May 2025 (Previsible). And this traffic is worth 4.4 times more than classic organic traffic in terms of conversion (Semrush, 2025).
The math is simple: even if AI traffic volume is still small in absolute terms, its quality is higher. Users who arrive through an AI citation are more qualified. They already have a precise intent and an explicit recommendation.
The right strategy is not to block, but to optimize to be cited with attribution.

5 strategies to turn zero-click into an opportunity
1. Produce "citable" content, not just indexable content
Content that AI can cite has precise characteristics: it answers directly in the first lines, it contains verifiable figures, it phrases its headings as questions with a short answer right below, it presents comparisons in tables and it is dated and kept up to date. In the Detekia calibration study (317 pages), these are the traits that distinguished cited pages, not Organization schema or an author's signature.
The goal is no longer to "rank well" on Google. It is to be the source the AI chooses to name explicitly in its answer.

When the AI says "according to a study by [your brand]...", that is the holy grail of positive zero-click. To get there, publish regularly:
- Industry studies with exclusive figures
- Recurring barometers (monthly or quarterly)
- Analyses of data that only you hold
AI engines cite the sources they cannot paraphrase without losing credibility. Your unique data is that source.
3. Strengthen your brand in AI answers
Even without a click, being mentioned by name in an AI answer is hugely valuable. It is free awareness with a qualified audience.
To maximize brand mentions:
- Use your brand name consistently across all your content
- Create "About" pages and detailed author profiles
- Build your presence on the sources AI engines consult: Wikipedia, trade press, LinkedIn
The stakes are rising with the arrival of ads in ChatGPT across Europe, France included: a brand can now pay to be visible in ChatGPT. A mention in the answer itself, however, cannot be bought: it is earned through the quality and reputation of your sources.

4. Create experiences AI cannot reproduce
AI can synthesize an article. It cannot reproduce:
- An interactive diagnostic tool (like Detekia's free GEO score)
- A personalized configurator
- A community with peer-to-peer exchanges
- A live webinar with Q&A
These experiences require a visit. By nature, they are immune to zero-click.
5. Monitor your presence in AI answers
You cannot optimize what you don't measure. The first step is to know whether and how AI engines talk about you:
- Are you mentioned when a user asks a question about your market?
- In what position? With what sentiment (positive, neutral, negative)?
- Which competitors are cited instead of you?
Detekia's free score includes a first citation test (5 queries on an OpenAI model). To find out, query by query, which sources and competitors ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity highlight in your market, Beeleven, the agency that built Detekia, runs an audit across all four AIs.

Zero-click is not the end of traffic; it's the end of easy traffic
AI zero-click rewrites the rules of the game. The abundant "free" organic traffic that came from Google was a historical anomaly, not a given right.
Companies that adapt will gain a considerable competitive advantage:
- Less traffic, but more qualified: a visitor who arrives through an AI citation has already been pre-qualified by the recommendation.
- A new form of awareness: being cited by ChatGPT in front of millions of users is worth more than position 3 on Google.
- First-mover advantage: AI engines tend to cite the same sources repeatedly. Being among the first to optimize creates a lock-in effect.
Zero-click is not a problem to solve. It is a paradigm shift to build into your digital strategy.
